Symbols
The symbols of the Ausland Volunteers reflect the organisation, their heritage, values, and purpose. Each emblem or icon is a testament to the legacy we build & honour, and the commitment we embody. Below are examples of the symbols used by the Ausland Volunteers and their significance.
RUNES
The Volunteer Runes are our own. They are the first and most important of the organisational iconography. Used across all Volunteer material, property and propaganda. These ancient-inspired markings are born to remind us of the bold resilience and strength of our community. As well as the shared heritage of the Volunteers, with the principles and values they carry into their mission.
Strict policies govern the use of the Runes. Items featuring these symbols are issued only to active members and must not be worn, distributed, or sold outside of official contexts. Members entrusted with these items follow proper disposal procedures to protect their integrity and meaning.
SHIELDS
The shields are carried by all of our volunteers as a testament to the mission of brotherhood and service.
The Left Shield features the organisation’s Runes—It marks their unique role in safeguarding communities and upholding the mission of Ausland Volunteers.
The Right Shield bears the Sig Rune, to bring strength, courage, and the will to act when duty requires. It serves as a reminder of the resilience and determination required by every Volunteer.
Together, the Volunteer Shields embody the principles of honour, service, and the shared heritage of those who wear them, reinforcing the spirit of our mission at every turn.
GRIMSTEAD
Grimstead is the unofficial mascot of Ausland Volunteers. He is a constant reminder to face challenges head-on and uphold the standards of resolve, loyalty, and courage expected of every Volunteer.
More than a symbol, Grimstead embodies the grit and determination that defines our mission—a bold figure that speaks to the strength and unity of those who wear the Runes.
Christ-Rune
The Christ-Rune (originally designed by Oswulf & adopted by the Ausland Volunteers) is raised as a profound reminder of the convergence of faith and heritage, merging the image of Christ’s sacrifice with the protection of the Algiz Rune. A symbol of humility, resilience, and divine grace, embodying the harmony between spiritual devotion and ancestral strength. Rooted in the timeless values of faith and kinship, this Christ-Rune calls upon those who see it to reflect on the sacred duty to honour both their lineage and their divine purpose, carrying forward a legacy of strength, sacrifice, hope, and strength.
ASHMARK
The Ashmark serves as the Sacral Standard of the Sacrathene Theological Society.
As the sacral standard of the Sacrathene Theological Society, the Ashmark identifies its institutions, clergy, and students, symbolizing discipline and continuity. Its design reflects the society's steadfast principles and mission.
VIGILIS
Vigilis of Ausland Volunteers, represents vigilance, strength, and leadership. Its name, derived from the Latin word for watchful, reflects the constant readiness and awareness required of those who lead and serve. A symbol of foresight and resilience, Vigilis stands for discipline, unity, and responsibility—core values of the AV mission. Just as the eagle surveys its surroundings with precision, AV members commit to sharp judgment, unwavering duty, and the pursuit of excellence.
Vigilis is not just an emblem—it is a standard of action, reminding every member to remain prepared, steadfast, and true to their purpose.
SEMPER
Semper is our individual endurance, progress, and balance. Inspired by the triskelion, it represents constant movement and adaptability. For the Ausland Volunteers, it serves as a reminder to keep moving forward while honouring the past.
National Flag
The Ausland Volunteers are not a national service, but as a proud people from many nations, the Volunteers wear the national flag on their left sleeve. This serves as a constant reminder of their duty, national identity, and commitment to the land they strive to support through their service.
Pictured is the Australian national flag, representing the birthplace of the Ausland Volunteers. International Units are expected to honour this tradition by displaying their own national flags in the same way.
FYLFOT
The fylfot is a symbol of resilience, unity, and balance, reflecting their mission to support communities with professionalism and humility. Rooted in its positive cultural significance, the fylfot embodies AV's commitment to service, tradition, and lasting impact, serving as a reminder of its dedication.
ORDER OF
THE WILLING
The Order of the Willing Shield is one of the Ausland Volunteers’ highest individual honours, awarded to those whose dedication and service surpassed all expectations. It is a symbol of extraordinary commitment and an enduring legacy of selflessness and resolve.
